The Game

Beyond-Human is a combination of platformer and hack & slash inspired by Metroid, Megaman, and Devil May Cry. Beyond-Human builds upon the classic open-world Metroidvania style by mixing a deep hack and slash combat system, exploration, and 16-bit pixel art. The combat is inspired by an exciting mix of the Metroid and Devil May Cry franchises. The combat may feel similar to people that have enjoyed Devil May Cry and Guacamelee. Melee combat is all about performing combos that are easy to do but hard to master. You will also unlock new weapons by defeating bosses and mini bosses to improve your arsenal.

Story

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world following a devastating alien invasion. Players will take control of Adam, a silent protagonist that wakes up in the year 2099 from a coma and suffers from amnesia. What happened to create this chaos? Who is Adam? The story revolves around solving these mysteries in a world where alien conspiracies have become reality.

Hey where's the download button?

By dev request, and because this game/demo is awesome, I've continued my gameplay!

The audio in general is some quality work, setting the tones of the areas, especially when the boss music kicks in. And holy carp that jam during Angel's fight. The overall atmosphere for the alien tube room had a nice creepiness to it, accentuated by the goopy bubble noises. I hate organic sounds, but that was a nice touch. And, of course, all of the gameplay was excellent. I like that the enemies are never just one-and-done, so you actually have to fight them or try to dodge around. Angel was a heck of a fight that kept me on my toes the entire time, never predictable, and the other two big fights were nicely done as well. No time for rest against these guys.

Of course, being a demo and early work, it's not without flaws. I notice two in my video, one involving the giant doors you unlock still sort of being there, but invisible, and the other is the energy bar depleting in an odd way sometimes. I also have a slight issue with the Jetpack stopping air combat randomly and at inconvenient times. Have played the game on my own time a little and really got screwed over against Angel when I'd try a combo or dodge and then just...stop.

Can't wait to see this as a completed work though. Smooth out the combat so combos don't feel as jerky and this'll be a really fun hack'n'slasher.

I liked the game a lot but I had some issues with the Jetpack, I find myself to accidentally press up and during the fight with Angel it got me killed more then once. I like the design of Angel as it looks like a small Anubis from ZOE, but I couldn't beat him, during the third phase I always got killed... anyway I still want to play the game again! Good luck on your Kickstarter!

I tried to do a Speedrun of the Demo

IT WAS SO FUN....the physics were awesome, the way you could float in air....amazing, the whole time i played i was enjoying it...8/10

This game was wonderful. It made me feel like I was playing Metroid fusion again.

The difficulty did jump from time to time (Specifically with those big brownish-orange aliens) but it never felt to unfair. My favorite part was fighting Angel. His(?) fight was so fine tuned to the players abilities. Keep up the great work!

I get a virus/malware warning in avast when I try to start the demo. 0.04 and 0.05 versions

This are 64 Antivirus and none of them detected a thing

Beyond Human, inspired by Metroid, successfully carries the same style of gameplay while remaining its own game. The story I've seen so far is unclear aside from "aliens happened, go unalive them," but that in no way stops this from being a great time.

That said...dooood, if the demo has this much quality to it, I am super interested to see how the full game turns out. I'm not really into Metroid style games and even I had a really good time with this. Then again, I enjoy running  around, swinging swords...

Fantastic job on this and keep up the good work. Will probably do a second part to this video soon.

Very nice demo, tons of nice secrets. Loving the DMC-style combat. My only major gripe is the Jetpack functionality. I found that it actually hampered by aerial maneuverability during the Angel fight because I would unintentionally activate it while jumping, which would leave me open for a world of hurt in the middle of my jump arc. I think it might work better mapped to a different button than Up (maybe L1/LB?)

Anyways, great work!

takes me back a bit when i first played metroid and, mega man. Sheesh i'm getting old haahah.

God damn this is good

i also suck at it. badly XD

Challenging and with potential... Now let's go back to.. take came of some unfinished business with a certain flying individual :)

This was awesome, definitely worthy of being kickstarted.  I enjoyed what I played of the demo, all 1 hour and 86 minutes of it.  My scattered thoughts:

  • Dualshock support! 👌👌👌
  • Game looks great even for a demo.
  • Movement in general feels stiff, this is probably my biggest problem with the game.
  • Some of the early enemies are pretty boring.
  • You can shoot the gun much faster when running, jumping, or aiming up.  Is this intentional?
  • Finding secrets feels satisfying.
  • I like the surprises from enemies.
  • The sword is badass, and I love the special death animation to it some enemies have.  It feels stiff to use though, especially in the air.  I was jump cancelling my swings a lot.
  • Sword swings in general have strange hitboxes.
  • Bosses were great, although I think the Angel boss went too long.
  • Many missing sound effects.  I know this is a demo but decent sound effects would really take the presentation to the next level.
  • There are actual metroids in one room, might make the lore confusing.

Very cool, I hope it gets kickstarted!

Thanks for the feedback, you are the first to notice the metroids :P all those are references to the games that inspired this game, just like the chozos in guacamelee

That was an excellent demo to play and I hope I did a good job with it and helps with your development.  I look forward to playing the whole thing when it is released, I think I missed a few things but I will do better in the full game, I think I missed a few things but I should do better in the full game.  5/5.
